The Church has a large number of services that are available for the faithful to pray together. Lenten Services Our Archdiocese has placed a number of services on the internet: The Akathist Hymn, named for the Greek to 'not sit', can be done on Friday evenings. Contained within the Small Compline, it is a preparation for the Annunciation to the Mother of God, and has many hymns in her honour. The Service of the Great Compline, named for the Latin for 'completion', can be done on other weeknights (i.e. Monday to Thursday). It is designed to be a service to complete the day. As a parish, we pray this on Thursday evenings during Lent. Each of these can be found at the bottom of the Archdiocesan page on Orthodox Worship.
Other Services The Small Intercessory Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos, also called the Small Paraklesis, is a series of hymns asking for the intercessions of the Mother of God before the throne of Christ, and is especially celebrated during the Fast for the Dormition of the Mother of God (August 1-14). The text of this can be found at the bottom of the Archdiocesan page on Orthodox Worship. While it should be noted that the bulk of the Divine Liturgy is mostly the same each time it is celebrated, major feasts of the Church can, and usually do, change significant portions of the Divine Liturgy. Each Divine Liturgy will, depending on what day of year, what time of year and how many days have passed in relation to Pentecost, have different Troparions, a different Kontakion and different readings from the Epistles and from the Gospel, respectively. For Dominical feasts, feasts of the Mother of God, and during Holy Week, other sections of the Divine Liturgy can change. In addition to their own troparion, kontakion and readings, there will be variations to the verses during the first and second antiphons, the Entrance Hymn, Thrice-Holy Hymn, the Cherubic Hymn, the Magnificat and the post-Communion hymn. During Lent, and on specific feastdays throughout the year, the Divine Liturgy of St Basil the Great is used. The main changes are in the priest's prayers and in the Magnificat (the hymn immediately after the Consecration).
