Thrice-Holy Hymns

These include the Thrice-Holy Hymn itself, and those hymns that, on certain days, are used instead of it. An asterisk is included to note where, on the fourth repetition (of five), only the second half is said.

Thrice-Holy Hymn:
Holy God, Holy Mighty, * Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.

This is the default hymn that is done after the Kontakion and immediately before the Epistle reading.

Baptismal Hymn instead of the Thrice-Holy. Nasser p410:
Ye who have been baptised into Christ, * have put on Christ, Alleluia.

Done on: Nativity (Dec 25), Theophany (Jan 6), Synaxis of St John the Baptist (Jan 7), Lazarus Saturday (day before Palm Sunday), Resurrection (Easter), Pentecost (50 days after Easter).

It used to be the tradition that baptisms woud happen on the Resurrection (with Lent being a preparation period both for the baptisands directly, and for their supporters, i.e. the Church. This was expanded to include Theophany, and then other days as the numbers of converts grew.

Holy Cross Hymn instead of the Thrice-Holy. Nasser p48:
Thy Cross, O Master, we adore, * and thy holy Resurrection we praise.

Done on: Elevation of the Life-Giving Cross (Sep 14), Adoration of the Precious Cross (Third Sunday of Lent).
