Events in Autumn 2008

9 March, 2008: In the Orthodox Calendar, today is considered both the Sunday of Forgiveness and Cheesefare Sunday. The latter title is because this is the last day for Orthodox Christians to eat dairy products until Easter. The Sunday of Forgiveness meant that the rite of forgiveness was celebrated at the end of the service, which involved all the congregants asking each other for forgiveness before beginning Lent. See the Great Lent 2008 Photo Gallery for photos.

10 March, 2008: Lent begins (no service). Orthodox Christians practise a fast from this day until Easter (this year, April 27). Part of the preparation for Lent (including Sundays dedicated to parables of the Publican and the Pharisee and the Prodigal Son) is that the primary fast is one from sin, and fasting from meat and dairy products is an aid to help us fast from sin.

Parishioners were reminded that the Divine Liturgy of St Basil the Great will be celebrated for all of the Sunday services during Great Lent.

Great Lent Growth Sessions: There are two sessions dedicated to spiritual growth during Great Lent being offered each week - Monday morning and Wednesday evening. All were invited and welcome.

Great Compline : During Lent, Great Compline was celebrated at 5:30pm on Thursdays at the Chapel at Villa la Salle, 32 Bauer St, Southport.

15 March, 2008: On the day of the Local Council Election, the Parish of St Barnabas held a Cake Stall at the Nerang polling booth, which raised a considerable amount of money for the Parish. Thanks to all who participated in this endeavour.

16 March, 2008: The First Sunday of Lent is referred to as the Sunday of Orthodoxy, commemorating the restoration of icons in the ninth century. See the Great Lent 2008 Photo Gallery for photos.

30 March, 2008: The Third Sunday of Lent is dedicated to commemorating the Veneration of the Holy Cross. Part of this is a procession around the church with a cross, which is surrounded by flowers, while the faithful sing 'Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us', followed by the faithful venerating the cross. See the Great Lent 2008 Photo Gallery for photos.

6 April, 2008: The Fourth Sunday of Lent is dedicated to commemorating St John Climacus, writer of 'The Ladder of Divine Ascent'. We celebrated the Divine Liturgy of St Basil the Great on this day, with Fr Raymond being assisted by Rev. Dcn James Savage, who celebrated at our parish for the first time after his 23/Mar ordination. See the Great Lent 2008 Photo Gallery for photos.

During Orthodox Holy Week, there were a number of services and commemorations. Fr Raymond heard confessions during Holy Week by appointment and set aside Wednesday 9:30-11:00am to hear confessions at Villa la Salle, 32 Bauer St, Southport.

23 April, 2008: On Great and Holy Wednesday, we celebrated the service of Holy Unction, where the faithful are anointed with oil for the healing of soul and body, from 7:15-8pm at Villa la Salle Chapel; 32 Bauer St, Southport.

24 April, 2008: On Great and Holy Thursday, we celebrated the Divine Liturgy, commemorating the Last Supper, from 7-8am at Villa la Salle Chapel; 32 Bauer St, Southport.

25 April, 2008: On Good and Holy Friday, we celebrated three services, commemorating the Crucifixion of our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
The first service, of the Royal Hours, was at 6:45am at Villa la Salle Chapel, 32 Bauer St, Southport.
The second service, the Vespers of the Taking-Down (of Christ from the Cross), was at 3:00pm at the Villa la Salle Chapel, 32 Bauer St, Southport.
The third service, the Lamentations, was at 6:00pm, Villa la Salle Chapel, 32 Bauer St, Southport.

27 April, 2008: With great joy, we celebrated the Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom on this day at the Chapel in Parkwood at 8:00am, commemorating the Resurrection from the dead of Jesus Christ and His victory over death.
Commemoration: The Resurrection of Our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Paschal Troparion (repeated many, many times): Christ is Risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and on those in the tombs bestowing life.
Antiphons and Entrance
: for the Resurrection.
Kontakion: Though Thou, O deathless One.
Thrice-Holy: Baptismal ('Ye who have been').
Readings: Acts 1:1-8; John 1:1-17.
